This picture was taken by Louis Daguerre in 1839. It is a shot of Boulevard du Temple in Paris. Although it looks like a ghost town, this was actually a picture of a very busy street. But since the exposure time was ten minutes, none of the people and horses that were out there actually showed up in the shot. They were moving too fast.
Except for that one guy in the left hand corner. He was in the midst of getting his boots shined, so he remained in one place long enough for his image to be captured. As a result he was the first person to ever be photographed. Nobody has any clue who he was. He probably died without having any idea that he was the first. He could have been anybody. A doctor, a lawyer, a banker, a thief, a pimp, a drunk, a musician, a politician, a traitor, a liar, a priest…who knows?
