A little more on the outrage pimps.
There have been a few folks who have taken an exception to my worries about right wing radio. Please be assured that these exceptions were based on reasons that were altruistic. In other words, I didn’t get any arguments that started with “But…but….these guys are the only people telling it like it is!” I’m pleased to report that I don’t know anyone that stupid.
Instead I got a few arguments that centered around the “Slippery Slope” theory. The idea being that if we force these right wing radio guys off the air it would be no different than banning Judas Priest for those two dullard kids who shot themselves in the eighties, or banning AC/DC because of Richard Ramirez.
I absolutely agree. And I certainly don’t think that these radio guys should be banned.
I do, however, think that when their influence on violent nut jobs becomes obvious, they should be called to account for it.
If a particularly damaged heavy metal fan walks into a shopping mall with an AK-47, and all he leaves behind by way of explanation is a bunch of heavy metal CDs, you can’t really blame the heavy metal bands for what this lunatic did. How could you? Are there any songs by Megadeth called “Massacre at the Mall,” or any songs by Slayer called “Last Stand at Orange Julius?” There isn’t anything specific. Hell, some of Black Sabbath’s songs are about demons and unicorns and wizards. What are you going to do? Go to the Renaissance Fair and shoot the place to pieces?
Or let’s say some school shooting perp actually says “I did this because Iron Maiden’s Peace of Mind album told me to do it.” That’s obviously “Son of Sam” territory. You can’t blame the guys in Iron Maiden for that.
But if they wrote a song called “Go to Your School and Kill Everyone Who Made Fun Of You,” and the lyrics described specific people to target, the best sort of ammo to use, where to buy a gun and where to pick off the most amount of targets, and if in most of his interviews Bruce Dickinson said stuff like “I think some of the most evil people in the world are walking the halls of high schools, and they are a threat to everything that decent people hold dear,” then Iron Maiden might have a little bit of explaining to do.
And that’s my beef with the right wing radio guys. They talk about specific people, and in the name of ratings and book sales they make it seem like these aren’t just the standard political disagreements that are being described, but rather the utter and complete SUBVERSION OF AMERICA. They tell you the names of people, politicians and groups that aren’t just doing things that they don’t agree with, but are rather directly responsible for everything that is wrong in America today.
There isn’t a debate about gun rights. It’s a war on gun owners. There isn’t a debate about the separation of church and state. It’s a war on Christians. There isn’t a party that we don’t agree with in the White House. It’s the liberal subversion of our values.
Did you lose your job? It’s because of the economic policies of Harry Reid, or Nancy Pelosi, or any particular Senator or Congressman that we don’t like. Not sure who any of these people are? Don’t worry. We’ll tell you.
Do you think that we are losing the war on terror? Well, you can thank the LIBERAL MEDIA for that. Not sure who the LIBERAL MEDIA is? Don’t worry. We’ll tell you.
Are you worried that some scumbag child molester will get off scot free? Well, in the event that he does, you can be sure that the ACLU had something to do with it. Not sure what the ACLU does? Don’t worry. We’ll tell you.
Are you worried about how the SUPREME COURT is ruining America? You aren’t? Well you should be. But it isn’t ALL of the people on the court, only SOME of them. Don’t worry. We’ll tell you WHICH ONES.
Are you afraid that gay people will start having sex in front of your children? You aren’t? Well you should be. And you know who IS ACTIVELY WORKING TOWARDS allowing gay people to have sex in front of your children? Don’t worry. We’ll tell you.
Do you like it when people KILL BABIES? You don’t? Would you like to know who is responsible for the MOST BABIES BEING KILLED? Don’t worry. We’ll tell you.
Are you afraid that the government is going to COME FOR YOUR GUNS? Well, you should be. Do you want to know who is leading the fight for the liberals to COME FOR YOUR GUNS? Don’t worry. We’ll tell you.
Are you afraid that someone is going to COME FOR YOUR BIBLES? Are you afraid that, as a Christian, THE LIBERALS HAVE DECLARED WAR ON YOU? You aren’t? Well you should be. And here are the top liberals that HATE YOU BECAUSE YOU ARE A CHRISTIAN.

So all we really want is to PROTECT YOU from THEM. Because they are COMING FOR YOU, YOUR CHILDREN, YOUR TRUCK, YOUR MONEY, YOUR GUNS, AND YOUR BIBLES. This is a REAL THREAT. It could happen ANY DAY NOW. And we want you to be AWARE OF THE SUBVERSION OF EVERYTHING THAT WE HOLD DEAR. We’ll tell you WHO these people are. We’ll tell you WHERE these people are. And we’ll tell you exactly HOW these people have made your life the desperate, teeth grinding pit of awfulness that it surely is. If only there was SOME WAY to DEFEAT THESE LIBERALS. If only they WERE GONE, then surely AMERICA would be WONDERFUL AGAIN.
But remember, we’re just entertainers.
See, that’s what doesn’t wash with me. If you make millions of dollars a year stirring the pot and pointing out enemies, if you have books and radio shows and TV shows where your only purpose is to make one half of America distrust, fear and hate the other half, if you are selling the idea that there is a “THEM” that the “GOOD PEOPLE” should be on the lookout for, then you should have to take responsibility for the results of the fear and paranoia that you have made a pretty good living off of.
If your ratings are completely handcuffed to the level of bogus outrage that you have to keep ratcheting up on a daily basis, then don’t feign surprise when people start to get killed. Because this is what it’s all heading for, and you HAD to know that that was going to be the end result.
